As part of its response to COVID-19, Canon China on Tuesday unveiled an IT system to authenticate employees' "smiling faces" when they enter offices and meeting rooms. The system can also take their body temperature. Canon hopes the system will help create a good atmosphere in a company prone to gloom from the outbreak.

Staff and visitors are reportedly asked to smile at tablet terminals at places such as the reception desk, which will display a smiley 

face if they are approved, while doors will not open if they scowls, the report said. It is said that the system can be used by members 

in a variety of situations, such as multi-functional photocopiers, and sold in conjunction with vigilance monitoring and meeting room 

utilization management functions.

The system was developed by Canon Innovation Technology (Beijing), a subsidiary of Canon in China, the Nikkei Chinese website 

reported Tuesday. It is said to have been introduced in Canon's China offices and improved the atmosphere inside the company. 

Daisei Eshihara, vice president of Canon China, said, "We hope to lighten up the gloomy atmosphere caused by COVID19 with a 

smile." We plan to promote it to the whole Asia and the whole world in the future. The system is already taking orders for offices, 

restaurants, schools and hospitals in China and Singapore.
